You open the game and a big-eyed anime girl is standing on the left of the screen with a bare face and a default top. The first screen asks you to choose a skin tone, and once you tap one, her face updates on the spot. From there you go straight into the makeup menu, which opens on eyebrows by default. Every product you tap appears on her face right away, so you can judge each choice before moving on.

The makeup kit is sorted the way a real vanity would be. Eyebrows come first, then eyeshadow in flat and shimmery shades, eyelashes, eyeliner, blush, and a long row of lipsticks, including a matte lipstick that completely changes the mood of a look. After the face there are colored contact lenses, hairstyles like a side braid or twin tails, and hair color on its own row. The last tabs hold dresses, jackets, and jewelry. Most pieces layer, so a choker still shows under a collared dress.

The difference between this and a generic character creator is that makeup is the main event, not an afterthought. Half the categories are cosmetic, and the eye looks in particular are drawn with real anime styling, heavy lashes and all. When you are happy, you save the finished look as a picture of her, ready to keep or redo. That saved portrait is the end of a round.

To get a strong result, pick the hair color before the eyeshadow, because warm shades fight warm hair. Try pairing a dark matte lipstick with barely-there eye makeup; it reads more interesting than going heavy on both. And check the eyeliner tab even if you skip it, since the lens colors sit in that same menu and are easy to miss.
